2 NSCN-K militants shot dead

Two members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) were killed in a suspected factional clash in Kohima on Saturday. The incident occurred less than 24 hours after the ceasefire monitoring group’s meeting. ne of the victims was Romeo Rengma, hailing from Tseminyu and the finance secretary of the Khaplang group. He and another militant, Soloz Rengma, had been abducted from the Dak Lane area of the capital around 10 am, the police said.

Panel date

The Justice P.C. Phukan commission of inquiry, appointed by the Assam government for probing the ethnic clashes in North Cachar Hills and Cachar districts, has extended the last date for submission of written statements by the administration, individuals and organisations up to August 20. The statements can be submitted to the secretary of the commission.

Dacoits held

Nagaon police arrested three members of an interstate gang of dacoits from Juria on Saturday evening. In another incident, a woman was apprehended by a team from Morigaon Sadar police station. A large number of fake golden ornaments was recovered from her.

Club donation

Lions Club of Guwahati city has donated relief materials for flood-affected people of Assam. The materials were handed over to the deputy commissioner of Kamrup for distribution among flood victims.

Agitation closed

The All India Radio and Doordarshan Technical Employees’ Association (Northeast zone) has withdrawn the next phase of agitation after receiving a written order from Prasar Bharati on the functioning of the office of the chief engineer (Northeast zone). The office will function with effect from August 14.

Arms racket

A gun-running racket has been unearthed by the army, choking off flow of arms to militant groups operating in Cachar and adjoining districts. The army had launched the operation in Karimganj district of south Assam.

School scheme

At least 60,000 children from nine districts of Assam are scheduled to gain substantial benefits in school with the help of an education guarantee scheme of the Asom Sarba Siksha Abhijan mission.
