Sulfa activist dies in hospital

Nagaon: Tension prevailed in Diphu town on Saturday night after a senior Sulfa cadre died in hospital following an attack by hoodlums.

According to Karbi Anglong police, Ratul Das was attacked with flowerpots. He was rushed to Diphu civil hospital in a critical condition, where he died after half-an-hour. “Investigation is on. It might be a pre-planned murder,” said Karbi Anglong additional superintendent of police (headquarters), Nityananda Goswami.

Life sentence

Agartala: Sisters Bandana Patra, 23 and Baby Patra, 21, were sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday by the additional district and session judge Subhash Bhattacharya here. The duo were sentenced for roasting alive their sister-in-law Anjana Acharjee on June 3, 2005. Anjana’s husband, Manohar Acharjee, an ice-cream vendor, testified in court against his sisters.

New flights

Aizawl: After 13 years, Aizawl will be re-connected to Silchar and Guwahati by the low-cost private carrier Simply Deccan from December 20. With three ATR flights a week, it will hop to Silchar in its first lap and fly to Aizawl before returning to Guwahati via Silchar.

Fatal fall

Silchar: A 30-year-old youth died after he fell into a drain while taking photographs at a wedding here on Saturday. Rintu Das’s skull was smashed and he died of his injuries while being taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Award

Imphal: The Baba Saheb Ambedkar Fellowship was conferred on dancer Sagolsem Premabati from Manipur by the Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Akademi in Delhi on December 9.
