Guwahati: Muttock organisations on Tuesday said they would honour chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal with the Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha award next month.
The organisations will hold a four-day event at Padumoni in Tinsukia from May 24, which is Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha Divas, to observe the 213th death anniversary of the Muttock king.
Several Muttock organisations, including the Sadou Asom Muttock Sanmilan, All Assam Matak Yuba Chatra Sanmilon (AAMYCS), Muttock Rajbonxa Unnayan Samiti and Asom Muttock Mahila Parishad, have decided to honour Sonowal with the second Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha award in recognition of his services towards the community. The award, comprising Rs 1 lakh, a Seleng sador and citation, will be presented to Sonowal on May 27.
AAMYCS adviser Mintu Barpatra said, "Our revered king was not recognised by the earlier governments. The Muttock kingdom stretched from the Arunachal border to Moran. It was annexed by the British in 1842. The present BJP government has recognised our king Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha and decided to organise a celebration on the lines of Sukapha Divas. We will honour Sonowal for taking several initiatives for the welfare of our community."
The organisations had submitted an 18-point charter of demands to Sonowal on Monday. Their main demands include Scheduled Tribe status for the Muttock community, a separate zila parishad with self-administration, a welfare fund till inclusion in the ST list, land for a guesthouse in Guwahati, reservation of seats in the Assembly, Lok Sabha and panchayats for the community, reservation of seats in state and national educational institutions and reservation in jobs.
