Dhubri, Aug. 26: The Dhubri district unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) took out a procession today in protest against the killing of Assamese people by the Nagas, police atrocities on protesters in Golaghat district, erratic power supply and artificial price rise of essential commodities.

BJYM activists also took out a procession at AT Road in Jorhat here carrying torches to protest against the “failure” of the government.

In Dhubri, the activists met electricity sub-divisional engineer Champak Mishra and demanded improvement of power supply in the district. They then moved to the Dhubri deputy commissioner’s office and staged a demonstration there on their 11-point demand.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Dhubri district BJYM president Ranjit Kumar Roy said they demanded the government to set up a judicial commission to inquire into the atrocities on the Assamese people living along the Nagaland border and ordered a judicial inquiry into the police firing and atrocities on common people and protesters.

“We also demanded the restoration of deteriorating law and order situation in the state, rehabilitation of displaced people along the Assam-Nagaland border, setting up of border checkposts with security, adequate compensation to the victims’ families and those injured in the flare-up,” Roy said.

Roy said their 11-point charter also includes regularisation of power supply in the district and steps to check the soaring prices of all essential commodities.

The demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office was also joined by Dhubri district BJP president and secretary Dipak Kumar Saha and Prosenjit Dutta respectively and the party vice-president Debamoy Sanyal.

The Morcha also submitted a memorandum to Assam governor J.B. Patnaik on their demands through Dhubri deputy commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita.
