Guwahati, Oct. 20: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today launched a fresh movement demanding action against business groups and individuals who had allegedly misused agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes in Kamrup district.
KMSS supporters, led by its president Akhil Gogoi, today staged a token hunger strike from 10am to 2pm in front of the office of Kamrup district superintendent of police at Amingaon, about 20km from here, demanding police action against those involved in the illegal acts.
The KMSS also announced that it would stage similar hunger strikes in front of the office of Assam director-general of police, chief minister Tarun Gogoi as well as the court of Kamrup session’s judge.
Akhil said they had to launch a fresh agitation, as the police were yet to make any arrest despite registering cases at Palashbari and Hajo police stations last month based on FIRs lodged by the Kamrup district administration.
“On September 28, cases were registered with Palashbari police station against 31 individuals and business establishments and against six others in Hajo police station. The cases were registered under section 406, 420 IPC but the accused managed to get anticipatory bail because of the failure of the police to oppose the bails through public prosecutors. Besides, the police should have registered the cases under stricter sections of law,” Akhil said.
Around 200 protesters shouted slogans against owners of real estate firms who had allegedly procured agricultural land and were using them for non-agricultural purposes.
Kamrup district administration had lodged the FIRs following continuous protests and demonstrations against three such real estate firms in parts of the district.
The state government, too, constituted a committee, headed by senior Congress legislator Bhumidhar Barman, to inquire into the increasing number complaints about illegal transfer of agricultural land across the state.
Sources said the committee was studying the KMSS complaints about illegal transfer of agricultural land into industrial land. “It is also looking into involvement of bureaucrats, government officials as well as police, if any, in the alleged illegal land transfer,” a source said.
Following the protests by the KMSS supporters in front of the office of Kamrup superintendent of police, the additional superintendent of police, Rubul Gogoi, promised them that the police would take appropriate steps for filing of the case diaries in the court.
