Guwahati, March 25: Goalpara police today filed a chargesheet against eight persons for the assault on Goalpara Foreigners' Tribunal judge Ajoy Phukan last month.
On February 16, a team of around 20 lawyers, protesting against Phukan's verdict - that declared eight suspected illegal migrants as foreign nationals - attacked him following a heated conversation and ransacked his office.
The chargesheet was filed in the Goalpara court this afternoon.
Besides, Nazrul Islam, Omar Farukh Chowdhury and Shahjahan Ali, who were named in the FIR lodged by Phukan with Goalpara (Sadar) police station, the chargesheet includes names of Anisul Haque, Md Anowar Hussain, Abdul Hamid, Mainal Haque and Abdul Baten.
"All the eight are lawyers. They were arrested earlier and are still in judicial custody," Goalpara superintendent of police Amitava Sinha said.
According to the chargesheet, they were booked for criminal conspiracy, rioting, house trespassing and assaulting public servant under Sections 120 (B), 147, 448, 353, 323 of the IPC and Section 3 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Ordinance, 1984.
The attack on Phukan sparked concern regarding the safety of the tribunal's members.
Several organisations and political parties condemned the attack.
The next day, Assam director-general of police Mukesh Sahay and special DGP (law and order) Kuladhar Saikia reached Goalpara to take stock of the police investigation and Goalpara police arrested four persons within 24 hours.
The state government has decided to strengthen security of tribunal members and presiding officers to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia had earlier said the high court and the Bar Council of India must carry out independent probes.
