Foodgrain godowns

Guwahati, Jan. 24: The Centre has proposed to construct 11 new foodgrain godowns at different locations in Assam to strengthen the public distribution system. These godowns would be constructed or expanded by the FCI, will add to foodgrain storage capacity of 3,47,000 metric tonnes in Assam.

Houses gutted

Dhubri: Altogether 11 houses were gutted in a fire at Japusabari village in the district on Wednesday night. Property worth Rs 12 lakh was destroyed. Fire broke out from an oil lamp in the house.

Free books

Dhubri: Dhubri Town Club distributed free books among the needy students of Classes IX and X of Ramani Kanta Basu Bangla Bidyapith of Dhubri townon Thursday.

Mishap

Jorhat: One person was killed and another injured when a Sivasagar-bound mini truck hit a tree on NH 37 at Teok on Thursday.

Accident

Tinsukia: Nisa Bhumij died on Wednesday night when she was hit by the Dibrugarh-Ledo passenger train while crossing the tracks near Tingrai in the district.

Effigy burnt

Tezpur: The BJP’s Tezpur West District Committee on Thursday burnt the effigy of Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde protesting against his recent comment on “Hindu terrorism”.

Man dies

Jorhat: Rajen Das, 32, died when a dumper hit his scooter in the Panisokuwa area on Thursday evening.
