Agartala, May 27: Police are yet to nail the killers of Youth Congress general secretary Debal Deb, who was gunned down here on May 16.
Deb was shot dead within 200 yards of Congress Bhawan and West Agartala police station, while he was returning home on his bike with PCC member Biswajit Sen and friend Haradhan Saha after attending a meeting.
Sen was injured in the attack, while Saha managed to flee from the spot. None of them recognised the killers.
Three Youth Congress activists, Subrata Paul, Bijay Das and Dilip Karmakar were arrested in connection with the killing.
Police sources said initially, Deb’s business deals and his relation with his partner was being probed. Later, however, the needle of suspicion started pointing to the infighting in the Youth Congress.
Sources said Deb had been aspiring to the post of Youth Congress president and had been assured by AICC leader Mukul Wasnik of the post.
“This probably made him a target and we are now looking into this angle,” a source said, adding that police has obtained details of the call register of Deb’s mobile phone from BSNL.
Even though police are hopeful of a breakthrough in the investigation soon, irate Congressmen and Deb’s family members have almost lost hope.
