Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said he would walk from his residence to his office on World Environment Day on June 5, observing it as No Vehicle Day as a part of his endeavour to save the environment.

Conrad resides at Fourth Mile, Upper Shillong, about 5km from the secretariat.

Conrad shared his plan while urging youths to come up with unique ideas to save power and protect the environment.

"Each one of us can contribute towards saving energy and protecting the environment by coming up with unique ideas. I want the youth to play their part too," he said while addressing Meghalaya Skills Competition 2018, organised by the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training at U Soso Tham auditorium here.

Conrad said he would also try not to consume electricity that day. "If we can do this even for a day, it will, to a great extent, reduce pollution, help save energy and protect our environment." He also advocated the need to make environment plastic-free and "our planet a liveable place".

Exhorting youths to sport a competitive spirit in whatever they do, Conrad called upon them to go beyond reservation. "It is great that we have reservation, but we must go beyond it and achieve goals in the competitive spirit," he said.

Talking about the importance of empowering youths with skills, he said skills have become extremely important for growth of the country and the state in particular.

Stating that the challenge ahead was far bigger, he added, "there is a need to have a synergy between skills and the job opportunities we are going create in order to make our youth and the country strong."
