May 6: Five persons were injured when the car they were travelling in overturned after hitting a speed breaker near Kamakhya Gate today.

Drink driving is suspected to be the cause of the mishap that occurred around 3.20pm.

The four passengers, Saraswat Goswami, Makumoni Bora, Dibyajyoti Kalita, Nayanjyoti Das and driver Nayanjyoti Senapati have sustained injuries of varying degrees and are undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in the city.

They were travelling from Maligaon towards Bharalumukh.

According to police, the accident occurred because of reckless driving.

Senapati was reportedly driving the car after consuming alcohol.

The police are planning to register a case against the driver at Jalukbari police station.

“Accidents mainly occurred because of reckless driving. The car they were travelling in was coming at a high speed. The driver was unable to control the speed while approaching a speed-breaker near Kamakhya Gate and the vehicle turned turtle. All of them have been injured and we rushed them to the nearest hospital. One among them is badly inured,” said a traffic police officer at Jalukbari traffic branch.

“We suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol. We have asked doctors to test the level of alcohol in his body. We are awaiting the report. If the other four passengers do not file any complaint against the driver, we will file a case against him for reckless driving,” the officer said.

With the city’s traffic police ill equipped to rein in drink and rash driving, the threat of tragedies looms of city roads.

There are more drink driving cases in the city than the rest of the state, an official of the 108 ambulance services had said.
