Golaghat, Aug. 21: Veer Lachit Sena, an NGO working for the upkeep of Assam's heritage, today filed a complaint with Bokakhat police station in Golaghat district against alleged encroachment and destruction of the Numali Garh (fortification) by some traders.
It alleged that Numali Garh, a symbol of pride for the Assamese, has been encroached upon and is being desecrated by some traders of the locality. Numali Garh is on NH 37 at Numaligarh Tiniali in Golaghat district.
Deb Chandan Bora, president of Veer Lachit Sena's Golaghat district unit, said: "Numali Garh was constructed by Ahom king Chakradhwaj Singha to save Assam from Mir Jumla's aggression. Dispur has turned a blind eye to its destruction. Therefore, we have filed this FIR."
