Guwahati, Sept. 15: City Police will take on Guwahati Super League champions Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) Sports Club in the inaugural match of the 63rd Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy Tournament at Nehru Stadium here tomorrow.

Altogether 12 teams, including I-League outfits Pune FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC, Shillong, are participating in the tournament.

The tournament was hit by acute financial constraints because of which foreign outfits could not be brought in.

The flagship event of the Guwahati Sports Association and a historic tournament of the country has been facing much hardship for the last few years because of apathy on the part of the government as well as the corporate sector.

Comptroller and Auditor-General’s Office, Delhi, is the only other team from outside the Northeast, apart from Pune FC, which will participate in the annual tournament.

Assam Football Association vice-president and former GSA president Jatindra K. Bora and veteran sports organiser Tapash Chatterjee will inaugurate the tournament tomorrow.

While City Police, ASEB SC, Green Valley Sports Club, Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club, Ganga Sports Club, Nagaland Police, Sikkim United FC and Oil India FC will play from the first round, CAG, Assam Rifles, Pune FC and Royal Wahingdoh will start campaign from the quarterfinals onwards.

The semi-finals will be played on September 25 and 26 while the final is scheduled for September 28.

Snooker meet: The 1st All-Assam Pool and Snooker Championship, 2014, is being organised by the Guwahati Pool and Snooker Association on September 27 and 28 at Physical Point in Tokobari here.

The event is being supported by Assam Association of Youth Soccer and Akshayam, a city-based NGO promoting sports, culture and tourism.
