Guwahati, Dec. 6: Rupankar Nath of West Bengal emerged champion in the 3rd Jugal Kishore Newatia international open-rating chess tournament that concluded in South Point School here on Saturday.
Nath, who was seeded seventh in the tournament, tallied eight points for the title, which carried a cash prize of Rs 40,000. Debashis Das of Orissa finished first runner-up with 7.5 points and walked away with a prize of Rs 25,000. Deepak Katiyar of Bihar, who also tallied 7.5 points, finished third as he was trailing Das in progressive scores and went home richer by Rs 15,000.
Santanu Borpatra (seven points) was the highest placed Assam player finishing sixth, followed by Rajib Dhar (6.5 points) in the seventh place.
Kaustav Kashyap Das emerged the under-11 age group champion with 4.5 points and was trailed by Piyush Upadhyaya with three points. Kaushik Doley bagged the under-13 best player’s award with five points, while Debanga K. Bhattacharyya finished first runner-up.
In the under-15 age group, Krishnashish Gogoi emerged champion tallying five points, while Padam Rupacha finished runner-up with four points.
The tournament, organised by Lions Kamrupa Chess Academy, saw 108 players from across the country, including international master Atanu Lahiri, five players from Sri Lanka and 22 from Nepal rubbing shoulders with each other.
Director of sports Sanjib Gohain Baruah was the chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony, which was presided over by Lions Club of Guwahati Kamrupa president Anil Agarwal.
