Anurag, Janashree eye glory

Duo enter two finals each

Guwahati, Dec. 18: It could be double crowns for Anurag Buragohain and Janashree Saikia tomorrow as the duo stand the chance of winning both the under-14 and under-18 titles in the boys' and girls' events of the All Assam Ranking Tennis Tournament, being held at the North East Tennis Foundation (NETF) here.

Both the players represent for hosts NETF.

Top seed Anurag today booked a berth in the under-14 final by defeating Karan B. Das 6-4, 6-0 in the semi-final. He will meet second seed Rishav Brahma, who beat Jishnu Baruah 6-0, 6-4, in the final.

In under-14 girls' category, second seed Janashree, who beat Breshna Khan 6-0, 6-1, will take on top seed Eva Raj Sah in the final. Sah overcame Kristi Boro 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the round of four.

In the veterans' (above-35 years) event, Diganta Thakur and Nabarun Saikia will meet Sanjib Baruah and Debandra Singh in the final.

The teams of Amal Das and Diganta Thakur, Amit Sahai and Rajendra Gupta, Nabarun Saikia and Hemanta Sarma and Atikur Rahman and Rahim Ali have made it to the semi-finals of the above-45 years event.

P. Ashok Babu and Makwana Bhavnaben will clash with Diganta Thakur and Sujata Sarma in the veteran mixed doubles (above-35 years) final.

Jorhat Open: Jorhat Tennis Club will host the 24th Jorhat Open from December 21 to 27. The Rs 74,000 prize-money meet will be for men and under-12, under-14 and under-18 boys and girls.

Assam chess: Top seed Trailokya Nanda and second seed Santanu Barpatra Gohain shared the lead with 15 others after the second round of the 39th All-Assam Inter-District Chess Championship (Open), under way at Diphu. Altogether 84 players, including 51 internationally rated players, are participating in the meet. The top four players will represent Assam in the National Chess Challenger in 2016.
