They say if there is an East Bengal-Mohun Bagan football match in Calcutta, the price of hilsa or prawns goes up depending on the match result. Well, the age-old Ghoti-Bangal rivalry will be played out on the football field once again on June 13, but with a twist. Keeping away their guitars and songbooks, a bunch of city musicians will split up into Ghoti and Bangal teams to take home the Chinglish Premier Gig trophy and to raise funds for footballer Kusumita Das’s treatment. Piku director Shoojit Sircar and actor Jisshu Sengupta will also take the field. Playing six-a-side, Upal Sengupta will lead the Bangal team of Shoojit, Jisshu, Anindya Bose, Gaurab Chatterjee and Ratul Shankar, among others. Babul Supriyo heads the Ghoti team that includes Anupam Roy, Shilajit, Pota and Joy Sarkar. “My friend Anupam told me about this match… and since it involved playing football and it’s for a cause, I immediately said yes. I’ll also get to meet a lot of people and make friends. Football is one of the most creative games. You take decisions within a fraction of a second. You get to develop a keen presence of mind and the creative process gives you a great high. I have to play football thrice a week. I’ll be the striker on Saturday!” said Shoojit, whose all-time favourite player is Lionel Messi. To catch the 70-minute action, turn up at the East Bengal grounds at 4pm today.
