Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) is a private-owned deemed university backed by the Aditya Birla Group and offers higher education and research degrees in science and engineering. BITS was established in 1964 by the Birla Education Trust as the Birla Colleges of Humanities, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science, which were later merged to form the Birla Institute of Technology & Science with G.D. Birla’s backing. Today, it is one of the most reputed and coveted institutes for engineering and sciences with three Indian campuses and one international campus.

BITS became one of the first six higher education establishments to be conferred with an “Institutes of Eminence” status set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2018. The BITS Pilani campus is the most popular and reputed campus of the institute; there are two other Indian engineering campuses in Mesra and Goa, and a BITS School of Management (BITSom) campus in Mumbai. BITS’ international campus is situated in Dubai; this international expansion led to BITS becoming the first internationally deemed university. BITS is a highly reputed engineering and science institute, and one of the few private engineering colleges comparable to the leading government-owned institutes like the IITs and NITs.
