Koraput: Tension gripped the Landiguda campus of the Central University of Orissa (CUO) as a group of agitating students tried to barge into the chamber of the vice-chancellor to press for their 60 points charter of demands on Thursday afternoon.

However, there has been no untoward incident as police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

"The students shouted slogans outside my chamber, but the situation was brought under control with intervention of the police. The students were taken out of the office," said CUO vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty.

Tension was palpable at the varsity since its opened on Tuesday after remaining closed sine die since March 15 following student agitation demanding fulfilment of their 60-point demands.

However, on Wednesday the students had locked up the administrative building on the main campus at Sunabeda, around 20km from here. The students said that the authorities falsely claimed that over 90 per cent of the demands had been met.

Following intervention of the district administration, the students unlocked the administrative building on Wednesday night. They, however, resumed their agitation on the Landiguda campus demanding direct discussion with Mohanty regarding their demands.

"The varsity authorities claim that 54 out of the 60 demands have been fulfilled, but it's not true. Except putting bulbs at a few places, no other demands have been fulfilled. Also, we condemn the manner in which the varsity was closed sine die. There was no valid reason to do it and the students missed several of their classes," said an agitating student.

"We will not call off our agitation until the VC talks to us," he added. However when contacted, the VC said: "With the intervention of the district administration and our alumnus, the situation is limping back to normalcy and I am ready to hold talks with the students. We want to clarify to the students that most of their demands have been fulfilled and the steps that have been taken to fulfil their remaining demands."

A few agitating students, who were on hunger strike, were shifted to the SLN Medical College and Hospital after their condition deteriorated on Thursday. "The students were down with fatigue and saline have been administered to them. Their condition is stable," said a doctor.

Tension had gripped the campus on the night of March 14 when the students sat on dharna demanding fulfilment of their demands which includes appointment of permanent professors, round the clock health care facilities, Wi-fi, hostels for research scholars and shifting of the main administrative office from Landiguda to its main campus.
