Calcutta: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s suspension for one match, in this case an ODI, for the second time in six weeks, has to be viewed at two levels.

That Dhoni didn’t learn from the Perth Test fiasco, when he fielded an all-pace attack and India ended up being two overs short. Secondly, and this is far more worrying, the team just doesn’t seem to be supporting the captain.

On Sunday, India were again two overs short, in the tri-series match against Australia, after allowances had been made by Match Referee Andy Pycroft.

That doomed Dhoni.

It was, after all, the second time in a 12-month period (after the April 2 World Cup final) that India were found wanting on the over-rate front in the 50-over format.

Perth had also been a repeat in 12 months at the highest level. Then, Dhoni had to miss out on the Adelaide Test, the last of a disastrous series.

This time, Dhoni can’t play on Tuesday, versus Sri Lanka. Besides, he’s been fined 40 per cent of his match fee, with each of the remaining 10 players docked 20 per cent.

Like in Perth, Dhoni fielded four quicks/medium pacers and an unusually hot day in Brisbane didn’t help.

Worse, despite retaining Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni didn’t call on the all-rounder to bowl even a single over of left-arm spin.

Dhoni did have an explanation, but a World Cup-winning captain should be able to anticipate such twists and turns in any script.

And, what about the remaining 10? Surely, they must have known that India couldn’t again be found wanting on the over-rate count.

The attack was led by the most experienced Zaheer Khan and he ought to have taken the lead in getting the Ranganath Vinay Kumars to hurry up. Equally, why didn’t a Gautam Gambhir push for urgency on the field?

It can’t be the captain’s responsibility alone to do everything, no matter how strong his credentials.

“Sadly, instead of Team India, I’d say it’s Team Individuals... I don’t know why, but there are many on a trip of their own,” a non-playing member of the touring party told The Telegraph.

Sensational stuff, but it’s not the first time that somebody with access to the India dressing room has spoken on those lines.

Do some have an agenda, which isn’t exactly hidden?

Footnote: Dhoni, it may be recalled, had to miss the Eden ODI against Sri Lanka 26 months ago for the same reason — the over-rate botch-up.
