Two groups of East Bengal supporters clashed in the Maidan area on Wednesday. Sixteen people were arrested and later released on bail. Atleast one suffered from head injuries.

The skirmish was between the group which is in favour of the club signing the final agreement with investor Shree Cement and the faction which is against it.

The protest was planned last week by a host of fan groups with East Bengal Real Power taking a lead role.

Senior club official Debabrata Sarkar said: “This is nothing new. This happens in Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting also.”
