Presented by the Guru Bipin Singh International Classical Dance Forum, Khurumjari, a two-day dance festival at ICCR, was a tribute to Singh, one of the leading exponents of Manipuri dance.
On Day One, the performances by the senior students focused on bringing out the intricacies of this particular genre. It was Singh who had taught his female students to play the pung. The pung vadan would have been a fitting tribute but for poor synchronization. The second day featured Singh's trademark compositions that were performed by a younger group. Nanichuri, presented by Sruti Performing Troupe, was an excellent portrayal of the famous sequence where Krishna steals butter along with his friends. The highlight of the second day was the impromptu performances by Darshana Jhaveri and Kalavati Devi.
However, production glitches meant that the presentations did not follow a logical sequence. Manini Radha, where Radha is kept waiting by Krishna, is not succeeded by Manbhanjan, which appears much later. The lighting did not help the production's cause either .
