Bhubaneswar, Nov. 13: A 22-year-old woman died this morning after a speeding truck hit her at Taraboi level-crossing on the city outskirts.

Following the accident, a mob set the stone-chips laden truck on fire and alleged that the ambulance arrived late.

The deceased, Kabita Prusty of Madhupur in Nayagarh, was riding her scooty when the accident took place. Prusty worked for a private investment firm and was on a money collection assignment.

"The speeding truck hit her from behind and she was thrown a few metres away. She shouted for help but the driver and helper of the truck fled the spot. Though we called an ambulance, it reached late," said a local resident. Prusty later succumbed to her injuries at Khurda Hospital.

Hundreds of local residents blocked the Khurda-Nayagarh road and set the vehicle on fire. Later, fire personnel reached the spot and doused the flames.

The situation was brought under control with the intervention of police.

"We have registered a case and have seized the vehicle involved in the accident. We are trying to nab the driver and helper of the vehicle," said inspector in charge of Jatni police station Sujit Kumar Pradhan.

The villagers also alleged that the 108 ambulance reached the spot late.

"We called up the 108 ambulance service around 7pm, it arrived two hours later. The victim could have been saved had it arrived earlier. The government should discontinue the ambulance service if it of no use to people," said a villager.

Earlier in June this year, a mob had set a vehicle on fire on Cuttcak-Puri bypass road near Sai Temple Square following the death of a 61-year-old person in an accident. Locals had set the SUV on fire after one Muralidhar Jena, a native of Koradakanta in Khurda district, was killed in the accident.
