The 37-year-old woman patient allegedly fell 50 feet to her death from the third floor at the hospital building.
Arati Jata of Chadheidhara village in Dhenkanal district was an indoor patient at the nephrology department on the building's third floor. She was on her way to the toilet when she slipped and fell. The way to the toilet is under construction and the stretch is devoid of any railings.
Arati died instantly.
The deceased, who got separated from her husband 15 years ago, lived with her parents.
She had been suffering from a kidney disease, and her father brought her to the hospital on Thursday. She was admitted to the indoor ward of the nephrology department the same day.
"She would have been alive had the balustrade been there. She was to be discharged today," said Kailash Chandra Jata, Arati's 70-year-old father.
"A police inquiry is on. Besides, the hospital superintendent has ordered a departmental inquiry into the death," hospital emergency officer Bhubananda Maharana told The Telegraph.
The police said an unnatural death case had been registered at Manglabag police station. Investigation was on, and the body had been sent for post-mortem.
