Balasore, July 20: A wild tusker today entered Baripada town and killed a 70-year-old man besides injuring several others, causing panic in the region.
Three of the 12 injured were sent to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment. The others are undergoing treatment at Baripada district headquarters hospital.
The tusker attacked the deceased, identified as Susen Baitha of ward No. 15 when he was in his paddy field.
Baitha was rushed to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries soon after his admission. Senior officials of forest department swung into action to chase the rogue tusker off the town.
It was driven to forest near Radhikasol, said a forest departmental staff.
Another tusker had been unleashing terror in areas under Badasahi, Betnoti and Dukura forest ranges since yesterday and killed Ambika Jena, 11, a Class VII student of Tunagambharia village.
Baripada divisional forest officer Sanjay Swain said: “Yesterday a minor girl was killed by a tusker in Badasahi and today in Baripada town, a 70-year-old man became the victim of another tusker. Besides, about 12 persons suffered injuries.”
