Sambalpur, April 17: Ten persons, including three women and four children, were killed following a head-on collision between a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a truck at Gurupali on Samabalpur-Rourkela Road in Rengali, around 27 kilometres from here, last night.
Eight accident victims died on the spot while two died later at Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital in Burla.
Twenty-one persons of Belpahar in Jharsuguda district had come to Hirakud in the vehicle. The mishap took place when they were returning to Belpahar from Hirakud. A truck, which was coming from the opposite side, hit the SUV at Gurupali.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Sohail, 25, Biwi Rizwan, 23, Mehar, 3, Seikh Salim, 30, Rehana Begum, 22, Sahin,6, Sahina Khatun, 46, Ruby Begum, 22, Mohammed Nasim, 28 and Nazia Khatun, 12.
Eleven persons have sustained injuries in the accident, of which two critical patients have been referred to Ispat General Hospital in Rourkela. They are Mohammed Razak, 17, and Mohammed Idu, 32.
“The accident took place around 11pm yesterday. The driver of the truck fled from the spot. It seems the truck hit the SUV directly while overtaking another vehicle,” said inspector in charge of Rengali police station P.K. Sahu.
