Talents leave mark in football tourney

Shuttlers from eastern region get residential facilities to hone skills

Bhubaneswar, May 15: The Oorja-CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces) Youth Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament concluded here yesterday.

In the girls' final, Cuttack defeated Sundargarh by 2-0 to lift the trophy. Deepa Nayak and Sasmita Behera scored one goal each for the winning team.

In the boys' category, the final match was played between Mayurbhanj and Rourkela Steel Plant.

The match ended in a draw within the prescribed time. In the penalty shootout, both the teams scored equal number of goals. Finally, Mayurbhanj won the match in sudden death.

The winners and the runners-up teams were awarded cash prizes of Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000, respectively. Susmita Tanty bagged best player's award in the girls' category, while Rahul Mukhi won the honour in the boys' category.

The tournament aimed at popularising the sport in the country in the run up to the Under-17 FIFA World Cup that will be played in India.

Governor S.C. Jamir, who was the chief quest at the award ceremony, said besides numerous operational duties, the CRPF was also vested with the challenging responsibility of organising sports events.

Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani, deputy inspector general of police, group centre, CRPF Suman Kant Tigga, deputy inspector general of police, Odisha sector, CRPF Rajesh Kumar, and the founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Achyuta Samanta were also present on the concluding day.

The winners in the boys' and girls' categories will represent the state in the second phase of the tournament that will be held in the Chhat tisgarh capital, Raipur.
