Balasore, March 2: The district administration has geared up to initiate precautionary measures following the death of a 34-year-old woman in swine flu yesterday.

This is the second reported death in the district and with this the toll in the state has reached four.

District collector Sanatan Mallick who reviewed the measures today said: "We are taking precautionary measures. I have asked for a meeting with all the medical officers."

The woman, who died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar yesterday, is the wife of an employee of a fish processing company in Balasore.

The victim, who is a resident of Puri had come to Balasore to stay with her husband in a rented house in Balaramgadi near Balasore. She has been staying there for the last three months.

Following the death, disease surveillance doctor B.M. Patra, yesterday visited Balaramgadi but "couldn't find any symptoms of swine flu in the neighbouring area". However, he said: "We don't want to take risk and asked the residents to take preventive measures and report to a doctor in case one is suffering from prolonged cough, cold, chest pain and vomiting. We are emphasising on the awareness among the people."

The basic preventive tips include avoiding a crowded place, wearing mask around mouth and nose and most importantly, cleaning hands with soap before taking meal and water. Chief district medical officer Bhabani Shankar Pani said: "We got to know that the victim and her husband had gone to Digha before she caught cold and cough."

About a week ago, additional director of fisheries (marine), Anup Sahu, who has been posted in Balasore, had died of swine flu.
