Berhampur, June 27: Nicky Nayak, who is an international dance star at the age of five, regaled dance lovers with her moves here a few days ago.
Earlier, in May, the youngster had won the world champion title at the International Dance Championship competition held at East Bourne near London.
Her mastery over modern dance as well as Bharatnatyam makes Nicky’s stage performances a delight to watch.
The little girl, who lives in London with her parents, performed at the conference hall of Jyoti Residency here.
“Nicky’s dance journey started at the age of three when she performed to an Odia song Damara Rabi Dela Re on the occasion of Raja in London. The festival was organised by the Odisha Society in 2010,” said Braja Nayak, Nicky’s father.
Braja and Bandini are the proud parents of Nicky who live at Sutton in south London.
Nicky’s inborn ability, talent and charisma to engage audiences of all ages through her energetic performances was evident when she won the international title last month. The competition had participants from 28 countries.
Replying to a question as to why Nicky opted for Bharatnatyam instead of Odissi, Braja said he was very keen on teaching her Odissi.
“The tragedy is that there is no one to teach my daughter Odissi in south London. There is a dancer called Bhuvna who teaches Bharatnatyam while Ritu, another dancer, has been training her in modern dance for the past six months. Earlier, she learnt to dance watching video clips on YouTube,” said Braja, who is originally from Kuruda in Balasore.
On behalf of the Odisha Society UK, Nicky greeted chief minister Naveen Patnaik with a bouquet in London on May 27.
Nicky stood second at Sutton’s Got Talent in 2010 and won Croydon’s Got Talent, 2012. She will also take part in the Dance India Dance auditions to be held in London next month, her parents said.
“I love to dance on stage. That is something I enjoy the most,” said Nicky.
