Bhubaneswar: Rampant encroachments have forced the public works department to stop construction of a new four-lane road between Kalinga Studio Square and Sum Hospital Square that aims to ease traffic in the area.
The authorities begun the construction, along with a parallel drain, at Ghatikia in February. They completed earth filling and constructed some parts of the drain, but could not proceed further as encroachments came in the way.
"We had started the work after conducting an eviction drive in the area. We planned to proceed accordingly, but faced problems when some other encroachers refused to vacate. We have written to the eviction committee for help," said a department official.
The four-lane road would connect Kalinga Studio Square and Sum Hospital Square via SOS Village. Though a 40-ft-wide four-lane road connects Kalinga Studio Square with Sum Hospital Square, it has narrowed down to 20ft near SOS Village. This causes inconvenience as vehicle movements often keep it congested. Ambulances bear the brunt the most.
The authorities planned to construct a new four-lane road measuring up to 624m. This new road will make a diversion from SOS Village and meet the other four-lane road at Sum Hospital Square.
However, concrete structures such as extensions of houses and shops, have come in the way. "The work was stopped because of such hindrances," said the official.
The situation goes out of hand during rains because of waterogging in absence of proper drains. "The road is necessary for smooth movement of ambulances. The authorities have to take steps to do away with such obstacles and construct the road," said Piku Mohanty, a shopkeeper near Sum Hospital Square.
