Koraput/Malkangiri, Jan. 20: The Communist Party of India (Maoist) today issued a fresh threat to people of the two districts warning them not to take part in the upcoming panchayat elections.

Sources said, local residents discovered posters issued by the rebels asking the villagers not to contest and cast votes in the polls near Machhkund-Lamataput Kuja, Amba Chhak and Anaka Deli panchayat office in Koraput, .

The rebels have also warned the tribals that they would take action in people's court if anybody was found voting in the three-tier panchayat poll.

In another incident, the Maoists have issued a similar threat to residents of tribal dominated Malkangiri district.

A letter written by the CPI (Maoist) secretary Rukdhara was found asking people to stay away from the polls.

On other hand, the director general of police K.B. Singh, during his visit to Malkangiri today, said the police would be able to safely conduct the polls in the rebel-hit areas of the district.

During his visit, Singh held discussions with local police officials where he said adequate security arrangements would be made for the polls.

"We held discussions with officers about Maoist activities and reviewed poll preparations. Despite problems in these areas, several candidates have filed their nomination papers for samiti positions. People are coming forward and we will be able to conduct the elections peacefully. We are prepared for any problems in the areas."

Singh said Maoists had called for a boycott of elections in certain areas. "But people have faith in democracy. Despite the threats, people have filed nominations in these places," he said.

Singh added that the cops would ensure the candidates' safety. "There will be adequate patrolling during polls and special operations in order to thwart any attempt to disrupt polls. The Maoists have lost public support after police operations led to death of several leaders," he said.
