Rourkela, Oct. 10: Train movement on the Howrah-Mumbai route was severely affected as the railway tracks along all the platforms here remained waterlogged for more than 12 hours.

Incessant rain caused massive waterlogging at Rourkela railway station last night. Around midnight, the downpour began, and within 10 minutes, it left many areas of the city waterlogged. Rourkela junction was badly affected as huge amount of water gushed in leading to severe waterlogging at the railway station.

The water entered the station from the Gopabandhupalli side, as the corporation drain overflowed. The water could not get discharged as the outlet was choked at the end of Gandhi Road, which is adjacent to the station. By 3am, the area went under water.

"The situation led to severe bunching (when no train is allowed into a particular station)," said station master Abhaya Mishra.

"I got the information around 3am and rushed to the station only to find the situation extremely grim, with many long distance trains stranded either at Bisra, Bondamunda, Panposh or Kalunga," said Mishra.

In another development, train services were disrupted between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar this evening due to a sudden thunderstorm and lightning. According to East Coast Railway officials, the signal system at several places between the two cities got dysfunctional because of the lightning.
