Cuttack, Sept. 18: The municipal corporation is trying hard to complete the road repair works before the Dussehra festival begins on September 30.

Official sources said that a plan has been chalked out to ensure that the work is done on time. Focus is particularly on approach roads to the puja pandals in the city.

Over five lakh devotees from various parts of the state visit the city during the festival.

Moreover, the progress of the repair work and other arrangements for the festival will be reviewed at a meeting scheduled tomorrow, a district administration official said.

“We want to complete the work by September 25,” said mayor Anita Behera.

Sources said Rs 2 lakh has been earmarked for the repair of potholes in each of 59 wards.

“The stretch at Khalasi lane connecting Buxi Bazar with Cantonment road is dotted with potholes and has not been repaired in the past one year. Traffic is diverted through this road during the immersion ceremony that will be observed on October 5,” said Dilip Bhuiyan, a commuter.

The condition of other major roads, including Ring Road, Jagatpur, Jobra, CDA, Tulasipur, Deulasahi, are also in a bad shape.

A Cuttack Municipal Corporation official said the low-pressure induced rain in the past couple of weeks had hampered the repair work on major roads that were dug for the integrated sanitation project being carried out by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The agency officials have been instructed to ensure that the roads that were earlier dug up for installation of sewer lines and construction of micro shafts at various parts of the city are restored within the stipulated time.

The Puja committees had also demanded immediate restoration of roads at a preparatory meeting held earlier this month.

“At the coordination meeting we had requested the officials of the district administration as well as the municipal corporation to complete the repair of roads, streelights and improvement of sanitation for the festival,” said Prakash Sahu, a member of a Puja committee.

A civic body official said the work for repair of defunct streetlights had already begun, while efforts are on to set up new lights near major puja pandals in the city.
