"No threat to books from technology"

The Indo-German Focal Point in collaboration with the B-School Forum recently organised a seminar on “Security, safety, social security and skill development starts with self and importance of safety and security in the field of disability” on the International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Research premises here.

The Indo-German Focal Point in collaboration with the B-School Forum recently organised a seminar on “Security, safety, social security and skill development starts with self and importance of safety and security in the field of disability” on the International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Research premises here. Secretary of the institute, Bishnupriya Mishra, explained the role of the institute in creating awareness amongst the disabled person by seminars, workshops, free speech and hearing camp at various localities of the city. B-School Forum founder Gautam Mohanty explained about the programme and spoke on creating awareness on various aspect of the risk factor involved in our society.

Scouting activities

The six-day 18th All India Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides Jamborette was inaugurated recently by railway board member staff D. K. Gayen in presence East Coast Railway general manager Umesh Singh. Inaugurating the event, Gayen said scouting activities develops the fundamentals of discipline in every child and also makes them brave and strong enough to face any situation. The gathering was aimed at putting scouts and guides from different parts of India under a single roof for exchange of culture, tradition, language, food habits, and folklore from different regions. 
 
Technology & books 

Writer and poet Ruskin Bond said on Tuesday despite the advancement of technology and advent of digital literature, the printed book would continue. When asked whether the printed book had a future in the backdrop of the rapid growth in technology, Bond said the printed book was still relevant and he did not see its popularity wane. The author, who is at presently in the city, to inaugurate the Tata Steel Bhubaneswar Literary Meet, was having a free-wheeling chat with the faculty, particularly from the department of English and humanities, and officers of the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University in Bhubaneswar. 

Nobel Laureate 

The blue light-emitting diode (LED) lamp holds great promise for increasing the quality of life for more than1.5 billion people around the world, who lack access to electricity grids, said Hiroshi Amano, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2014), at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, on January 6. Amano was delivering a talk on “Blue LEDs and Transformative Electronics for Developing Sustainable Smart Society” under KIIT Knowledge Tree Lecture Series. Many students and faculty members interacted with the Nobel Laureate in the question and answer 
session.

Innovation & science 

The Berhampur University has sought the state government’s help in setting up a centre of excellence for research and innovation on humanities, science and technology in the institute and sought Rs 38 crore for the project. The authorities submitted a proposal to the state government for establishment of the centre at Bhanja Vihar, the university campus. The university has requested the government to sanction the amount under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan. The proposed centre will help the university strengthen research and innovation both in science and technology and humanities. 

Self-defence training

The first batch of 25 girls from various slums from the Bhubaneswar Town Centre District area recently completed a10-day self-defence training module at the Utkal Karate School in Bhubaneswar. The training was imparted as part of the Socially Smart Bhubaneswar initiative of the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund. The girl learnt about  attacking techniques.
