Cuttack: Police on Saturday nabbed Ajaya Kumar Sahu alias Jitu for his alleged involvement in several cases of robbery and illegal use of firearms.

The cops recovered a 9mm pistol, six rounds, a motorcycle and Rs 9,000 in cash from Jitu. He was booked for robbery and unauthorised possession of firearms and remanded to jail after a local court rejected his bail plea.

The cops tracked Jitu, a resident of Aparnanagar in Chauliaganj, and arrested him for allegedly robbing a man of Rs 60,000 near Matagajpur railway crossing.

The 25-year-old had gained notoriety in Chauliaganj police limits for robbing people at gunpoint.

Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said: "During investigations, we learnt that Jitu along with three associates - Loknath Sahoo of Matagajpur, Subha Parida of Kulakalapada and Chiku of Mahanadi Vihar - had committed the crime."

The arrest came during a probe into a complaint by Ganjam resident Ranjit Kumaer Sethi with Kandarpur police.

Sethi, who works for a finance company, was returning from Matagajpur around 11.30am on April 12 after collecting Rs 60,910 in cash from different groups. On the way, three persons on a motorcycle stopped him on a lonely stretch along the Kathajodi embankment near Matagajpur level crossing and took away his bag at gunpoint.

They also snatched his tablet, biometric machine and a smartphone, Sethi had stated in his complaint.

The cops have launched a manhunt for the other three members of the gang.

Tiles loot

Five persons were arrested and 13 packets of tiles recovered from them in a case of theft from a tiles depot at Choudwar on Saturday night. The gang had used a pick up van and left with 25 packets of tiles by breaking into the depot on Friday night.
