Bhubaneswar: The state government on Tuesday decided to depute a technical team to test water quality of the Daya river flowing through the city.

Revenue and disaster management minister Maheswar Mohanty, who presided over a meeting to take stock of the river's pollution level, said the team would collect water samples for test.

"If the water at any point is found to be unfit for human consumption, alternative measures will be taken," said Mohanty.

Earlier, it had been decided that six treatment plants would be commissioned to make the river pollution-free.

Forest and environment minister Bijoyshree Routray on Tuesday informed the Assembly that authorities of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Khurda district administration, housing and urban development department and the Public Health Engineering Organisation had been asked to take steps to make the Daya and Kuakhai rivers pollution free.

Routray said the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board was taking steps to set up six sewerage treatment plants across the city to purify the waste water. The waste water to be treated through the integrated sewerage system of Bhubaneswar city would be released to Gangua nullah. Besides, the board had taken up construction of interception and diversion projects at a few places.
