Tata Consultancy Services selected 726 students from Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), faculty of engineering of the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar, during a campus recruitment drive last week. The selection was made from a pool of 969 eligible students belonging to B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, Pharmacy and M.Sc. (Biotech) streams and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences under the university, said R.K. Hota, ITER placement officer. Wipro Technologies also recruited 149 students from ITER.
A total of 251 students of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, bagged jobs from Accenture on September 22. The selected ones belong to B.Tech, M.Tech and MCA streams.
IBM-Daksh conducted a campus placement drive at BJB (Autonomous) College, Bhubaneswar, last week in which around 150 Plus Three final-year students from arts, science and commerce participated. In the first round, the basic pronunciation skill of students was tested and only 39 students made it to the next round, which included personal interviews and a written examination. Finally, 21 students were selected for the post of executive (operations) in Calcutta, Gurgaon and Chandigarh.
Friends in need
Students of educational institutes in the capital, including Utkal University and TempleCity Institute of Technology and Engineering (Tite), visited flood-hit regions of the state to distribute relief materials. Utkal students visited some of the worst-affected villages in Cuttack, Puri, Sonepur and Nimapara districts. They distributed food, drinking water, candles, matchboxes and other materials among the people. Fourth-year students of Tite collected money from their classmates, juniors and teachers and visited flood victims of Kanash block in Puri.
Football championship
Sambalpur University hosted the East Zone Inter-University Football Championship of the Association of Indian Universities in Rourkela from September 20 to 25. Thirty-nine universities took part in the tournament. Manipur University emerged champions while Burdwan University, Bengal, were the runners-up. M.G. Kashi Vidyapith University, Varanasi, and Sambalpur University finished third and fourth, respectively. Minister of housing and urban development Sarada Prasad Nayak distributed the prizes to the top four teams, which qualified for the national championship.
Print-making
A five-day print-making workshop was organised last week at Charu ‘O’ Karu Kala Mahavidyalaya, an art college in Balasore. Eminent artists such as, Tarakanta Parida, Arun Kumar Jena, Santosh Maharana and Sangeeta Samantray and Calcutta-based Abdul Salam gave tips to the students. College chairman Himansu Das addressed the students regarding careers in the field of fine arts. “Such workshops are conducted every year before the Puja vacations to provide exposure to the students on various art forms,” principal, N.B. Das said.
Induction ceremony
Biju Patnaik Institute of IT and Management Studies, Bhubaneswar, conducted an induction programme titled “Spark” for MBA freshers on September 26. A welcome speech by principal P.R. Pattanayak was followed by an address by chief guest Padmalaya Mandhata (associate HR, Infosys) who spoke about setting goals in life and working towards achieving them.
Rural development
A national seminar on “The role of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) in rural development” was organised at Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, under the aegis of the business administration department on September 19. Eminent speakers such as, Asharam Tripathy, professor from Banaras Hindu University, Trinath Rout of Swami Vivekananda College and university vice-chancellor Kumarbar Das emphasised on the role of Nabard in developing the village resources of Orissa by extending financial support.
Sociology talk
A seminar on “Collective mobilisation of development-induced displacement: Three case studies of contemporary Orissa” was organised by the sociology department of Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, on September 21. The guest lecturer was B.K. Patnaik, professor from IIT, Kanpur, who spoke about the Tata Steel project in Kalinga Nagar, Utkal Alumina in Kashipur and Vedanta Alumina at Lanjigarh. Head of the department D.R. Sahu and lecturer S.P. Ray also addressed the students.
Orientation
Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET), Bhubaneswar, conducted an orientation ceremony for the new batch of students on September 19. Retired Brigadier N. Dhal graced the ceremony as the chief guest. Dean of students’ welfare P.C. Senapati spoke about anti-ragging rules and academic rules.
Accreditation
Srusti Academy of Management, Bhubaneswar, was accredited “A” grade institution by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission for a period of five years based on curriculum, teaching, research, consultancy, learning resources, student support and progress, governance and innovative practices.
World Deaf Day
Institute of Health Sciences, Bhubaneswar, observed World Deaf Day on September 24 in association with Rotary Club. A seminar on “Early intervention in hearing impairment” and a rally (flagged off by actress Anu Choudhary from Utkal University) was organised. Minister of women and child development Anjali Behera addressed a public meeting in the evening.
Freshers’ day
Modern Engineering and Management Studies (Mems), Balasore, organised a welcome function for the freshers on September 16. In his speech, Mems chairman Himansu Das said students should be disciplined, punctual and sincere to be successful in life. A colourful cultural programme was also organised.
