Cuttack: The lawyers' cease work that has paralysed Orissa High Court proceedings for seven days will continue till next week over the demand for arrest of the police personnel involved in the assault of a member advocate, the bar association said on Wednesday.
The association has in a general body meeting decided that the cease work will continue till the erring policemen are arrested and the decision will be reviewed on Monday, its secretary Saryabrata Mohanty said.
"We decided to continue with our agitation as nothing has been done on our demand. Our members will hold a meeting on Wednesday to take a decision on future course of action," Mohanty said. "But before that, we have called for a meeting of the bar associations in the state on Saturday to discuss on our ongoing agitation," he said.
The high court on Tuesday ordered a probe by the state CID crime branch into the "physical abuse and assault" on the lawyer by police personnel near the fish market at Nuabazar on August 28. "The order has in no way addressed our demand. The court has fixed Monday for hearing on the matter. We will also place our point of view before the court on that day," Mohanty said.
The court had passed the order on two petitions seeking judicial inquiry by a retired high court judge into the "insults and assaults on the honour, dignity and authority of the advocates and immediate action to apprehend the concerned police personnel who physically abused and assaulted the lawyer". Cuttack Bar Association president Umakanta Nanda and Nationalist Lawyers' Forum convenor Sabyasachi Mohapatra filed the two petitions.
