Koraput: The 14-year-old school girl who was allegedly gang-raped by four security personnel on October 10 last year committed suicide at her home on Monday, triggering protests from the Congress and the BJP.
The girl had earlier attempted to end her life by taking overdose of iron tablets.
Following an uproar that followed the incident, the state government had ordered a judicial probe into the incident early last month. Earlier, the government had handed over the case to the Crime Branch.
Police had maintained that no security personnel were involved in the incident. They had even denied the allegation of gang-rape.
The Class IX student was a resident of Musaguda village in the district's Pottangi police limits.
Sub-divisional police officer, Sunabeda, Nara Hari Nayak said the girl hanged herself at her home on Monday afternoon and was declared brought dead at Kunduli Hospital, which is about eight kilometres from her village.
The news of her death triggered protests with villagers resisting autopsy of the body.
"The situation is tense at Kunduli and we are trying to pacify the villagers," said Koraput sub-collector Krutibas Rout.
The girl had alleged that she was gang-raped by four persons in camouflage uniform at the Lanjiguda forest while she was returning to her school at Sorisopadar from Kunduli.
During her treatment at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput she had accused the police of harassing and putting pressure on her to change her statement.
She had also accused the DGP of offering money to secure her signature on a blank sheet of paper.
After the incident became public, political parties had staged protests, including bandh.
This prompted chief minister Naveen Patnaik to order a judicial probe into the case.
Reacting to the suicide, the BJP and the Congress have threatened to launch state-wide agitation alleging that the girl had ended her life as she did not get justice.
Terming the incident as "unfortunate", Congress whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.
"Though the chief minister is in charge of the home ministry, he didn't take the case seriously. The state government deliberately delayed judicial inquiry into the case. We will demand a CBI inquiry into it," said Bahinipati.
The BJP on Monday threatened to launch a state-wide agitation seeking justice for the deceased.
"It is a case of murder and the chief minister should resign," BJP leader and Union tribal welfare minister Jual Oram said.
The BJP workers tried to gherao the Naveen Nivas, but were stopped by the police near Old Airport Square.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, however, expressed grief and conveyed deep sympathy to bereaved family members.
