You were the most expensive player in the first OPL. How different was IPL for you?
OPL is a regional league whereas IPL is international. I got an opportunity to play with all the international players who I had always admired. I even got to share the dressing room with my idols. I feel it is definitely the best platform for any young Indian cricketer to showcase his talent. At the same time, OPL was too much fun and I feel it is a great project to find local talents and promote them. I missed it this year.
What was the most memorable moment as a player of Sunrisers Hyderabad for you?
There were many memorable moments during this IPL. But speaking of being a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad team, I was really glad I could make one innings count for the team’s victory when I hit my maiden half-century against Rajasthan Royals in the penultimate league match that helped us get a seat in the playoffs. Also, interacting with Sachin Tendulkar was a special experience.
How has it been being a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad?
We have the best team, best coach (Tom Moody) and best captains (Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White). Our support staff is equally amazing. It has been a matter of pride to be associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
You were the most expensive player in OPL-I, scored the first century of that tournament and your team Katak Barabati Tigers was the runner-up. But this year there was no bidding and yet Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) went ahead to host OPL II. What’s your take on Odisha’s cricket?
Despite lots of disturbances last year, OCA has done a great job this year. Talking about Ranji or national cricket, Odisha has done much better than the past two years. Many young talents are coming up. Future of Odisha cricket is in safe hands.
Every cricketer dreams to wear the country’s jersey on field. Do you feel you are inching closer to that dream?
I would obviously love to play for my country. I am keen on taking Odisha to the next level and make it known for its cricketers. I am sure I am closer to my dream now than before. In fact, I wish Odisha had an IPL team too!
Who are your idols in world cricket and regional cricket?
I have always followed Brain Lara and Michael Bevan. I was fortunate that Bevan was Odisha’s coach for a while. Coming to Odisha, I obviously admire Debashis Mohanty and Shivsundar Das for having made it to international cricket.
You are 24 now. Do you have any plans of getting married soon?
Well, I believe I still have some time in hand. But yes, I do have a girlfriend. (Laughs)
