Bhubaneswar, Jan. 4: The state commerce and transport department has decided to dispatch the driving licence and registration certificate by speed post and registered post with a view to addressing the difficulties faced by applicants.

An order to this effect stated that the new system would come into effect from February 1 and applicants would have to pay an additional charge towards dispatch fee.

The applicants would have to bear the additional cost of post.

While an applicant residing in the urban area, where the respective regional transport office is located, needs to deposit additional Rs 20, Rs 40 will be charged for other areas.

“This will not only help minimise the visits to the concerned regional transport office, but also act as a measure to ensure that the applicants provide correct residential addressees while applying for driving licence and registration certificate. This will also be helpful in preventing unscrupulous elements applying for the driving licence and the registration certificate with fictitious addresses,” said a senior official of transport department.

At present, an applicant is required to deposit Rs 350 to obtain a licence for two wheelers. Application fees for the registration certificate differ from vehicle to vehicle. The current practice of getting the certificate involves the showroom from which the vehicle is bought.

The applicant needs to collect it from the showroom. But with the new system, the applicant needs not visit the showroom frequently for it.

“We will also cancel the registration certificate and driving licence if the applicant has applied on a false address,” said an official.

The state has 31 regional transport offices, which issue around 25,000 driving licences every month.
