Bhubaneswar: Police on Thursday confirmed that Unmaya Padhi, 46, whose half-burnt body was recovered from Kuakhai river bank on March 22, had committed suicide. Padhi's family members, however, rubbished the police claim and said that they would move court seeking a CBI inquiry.

Addressing a news conference, police commissioner Y.B Khurania said that though the police initially suspected it to be a case of murder, it later turned out to be a case of well-planned suicide. Khurania said that their probe was based on the post-mortem report, forensic analysis and the report of the handwriting bureau.

"The post-mortem of the deceased revealed that the stabbing in the body of the deceased was self-inflicted. We have also found a letter from the spot in which the deceased had mentioned that he was being tortured by a girl and her boyfriend, and was blackmailed into paying hefty amount. But an investigation into his banking transactions revealed that he and his brother withdrew money from the bank at regular intervals for their own personal use," said Khurania.

The handwriting of the letter was also found to be of Padhi.

On the other hand, the elder brother of the deceased, Chimnay rubbished the police claim and demanded a CBI probe.
