Jajpur, July 6: Ten people were killed and one seriously injured when a Bolero in which they were travelling dashed against a roadside stationary truck near Brahmanidevi D.I.E.T. School under the Korei police station limits on NH-215 in Jajpur district at about 5am today.

The Bolero carrying a marriage party was returning from Chakua village in Jajpur to Gadabandhagada village in Keonjhar. The over-loaded car hit the stranded truck from behind.

“The car hit the stranded truck in such a speed that the ten-wheeler goods carrier moved to some distant in front,” said Rabinarayan Das, an eyewitness.

On hearing the sound of the accident, labourers working in nearby brick kilns rushed to the site and informed the fire brigade on Jajpur road. The fire brigade personnel along with the labourers had rescued the bodies crushed under the truck, Das said.

While 10 persons, including the car driver, died on the spot, one sustained serious injuries in the accident, he said.

The victims had been identified as Rajkishore Jena, 24, Bibhu Prasad Nayak, 27, Niranjan Patra, 23, Prabhat Kumar Nayak, 22, Dibakar Nayak, 23, Smruti Ranjan Patra, 21, Brajendra Nayak, 44 and Dayanidhi Nayak, 65, of Gadabandhagada village and driver of the Bolero Subash Behera, 23, of Patoli village and Chandan Mistry, 50, of Bengal, police said.

The seriously injured was sent to S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after first aid at Area Hospital on Jajpur Road.

Initial investigation blamed the high speed of the car for the accident.

“As per our preliminary investigation, the Bolero carrying the marriage party was moving in high speed. Moreover, it was carrying load far beyond its capacity,” said Jajpur superintendent of police Deepak Kumar.

The police would take certain measures to prevent such mishaps in future, he said.

The bodies were sent to community health centre at Danagadi for post-mortem.

The truck has been seized and further investigation is on.
