Cuttack, Aug. 8: The Millennium City is set to get a new traffic police station soon.

A two-storey building housing the police station would be made operational at Madhupatna Square here on Tuesday.

The structure will also include a trauma care centre to deal with accident-related emergencies on roads, particularly National Highway (NH) – 5, that pass through the city.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik is likely to inaugurate the police station tomorrow evening.

“The new traffic police station will ensure better services and traffic management from a centralised location,” said deputy commissioner of police Praveen Kumar.

According to Kumar, the police station is spacious and the trauma care centre would provide quick medical facilities people who have met with road accidents. It would also play a crucial role in minimising deaths in various road accidents as the victims can be offered life-saving treatments including first aid before they are shifted to nearby hospitals, including SCB Medical College and Hospital.

A doctor would be appointed to provide round-the-clock services. The centre would have two ambulances to cover the national highway from Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar to Manguli Chhack.

“The building has been constructed at a strategic location. It is spread across an area of 1637 sqft (both floors) and officials can easily monitor traffic movement at the Madhupatna crossing from the building,” said police housing corporation executive engineer S. Bhaskaran, adding that the cost of the entire project was Rs 48.9 lakh.

The Madhupatna crossing is one of the busiest junctions in the city. It is the converging point for traffic of the entire city and national highway.

According to official sources, in a month on an average 25 persons are injured while eight to 10 die in various road accidents along the stretch of national highway from Rasulgarh up to Manguli via Madhupatna.

Moreover, two to three minor accidents occur on a daily basis on the highway.

“Though the town traffic squad of Cuttack city was constituted in 1940, a separate building also known as a traffic tower was inaugurated at Badambadi crossing in 1988. Subsequently, it was upgraded into a police station in 2009. Now, the new building of the traffic police station would be helpful in overcoming the lacunas in traffic management,” said an official.
