Bhubaneswar: A group of Utkal University students on Wednesday demonstrated in front of Saheed Nagar police station alleging partial behaviour towards one group while dealing with group clashes on campus.

Six students suffered injuries in clashes between two groups on Saturday.

Tension prevailed in the campus today again after a second year PG student was assaulted by other group in the campus. The victim Biswaranjan Jena with head injuries was later rushed to the Capital Hospital.

"The police have only taken action against one group and arrested three of them, while the other group continues to terrorise us. They have not acted against them as they belong to the ruling party's students' wings. This has encouraged them and they continue to assault us," alleged Ratan Kumar Digal, a student.

The two groups have clashed several times since Saturday and have lodged police complaints against each. One of the groups had also staged a roadblock on Sunday.

"The police should act without any bias. If they arrested members of one group, then they should arrest members of the other group, as they were involved in a similar offence. We will stage an indefinite strike on campus from tomorrow (Thursday)," said another student.

Assistant commissioner of police and Saheed Nagar police station in-charge K.C. Mund said they had started a probe. "We have deployed two platoons of police on campus to avoid any further incident. Besides, we are in constant touch with the university authorities to restore peace on campus," said Mund.

The varsity authorities, on the other hand, urged both groups of students to refrain from violence. "The campus has remained volatile since the clash. We have asked the police to initiate appropriate action against unruly elements from both groups," said a faculty member.

Hoax caller held

Police on Wednesday arrested one person for allegedly making hoax calls to the police control room. The accused has been identified as Pravat Swain, a resident of Patrapada. Swain had been making hoax calls to the control room for the past few months.
