Cuttack, April 1: State police are working towards increasing the efficiency to deal with hi-tech crimes, including those related to the cyber world and economic offences.

Keeping in view the spurt in online frauds and other cyber crimes, a second dedicated cyber police station will shortly be set up in the state, said director-general of police Sanjiv Marik.

While talking to reporters on the sidelines of the 80th Odisha Police Foundation Day here today, Marik said the proposed cyber police station would come up in Bhuban-eswar. Besides, there are plans to set up anti-human trafficking units in all the districts as well. An advanced DNA profiling unit has been set up to assist the cops by ensuring fast dissemination and analysis of evidences, apart from other forensic reports.

"Odisha police are taking adequate steps for effective investigation, and emphasis is also being given on better co-ordination between the police and the public as part of the community policing initiative," said Marik.

A senior official said various reception centres and mahila help desks were also being set up at police stations to offer urgent assistance to the people, especially women, in distress.

Left-wing extremism still poses a serious challenge to the police as a complete check on the menace has not yet been possible, despite tremendous success achieved against the rebels in the past two years.

"Our focus will now be on the smooth conduct of Nabakalebar festival, and adequate steps are being taken for security as well as better crowd management in Puri for the festival," Marik said. At the function, 50 cops won state honour and 16 officials were also conferred with awards for meritorious services.
