Agartala: Three persons were arrested from Tripura's Khowai district on Friday for allegedly assaulting a 35-year-old indigenous woman last month.

Dasharath Reang, 50, Labkumar Reang, 45, and Charania Reang, 40, are accused of abusing the woman, who hails from Khowai district.

Dasharath was arrested on Wednesday, the day the complaint was filed. He was later produced in a local court.

The other two were arrested and produced in a local court on Friday.

The woman had to be hospitalised after the attack on July 17. She lodged a complaint against the three persons at Mungiakami police station after returning from hospital, following which the police registered an FIR.

The complaint was lodged on August 8, 24 days after she was allegedly assaulted and tortured by the three accused on her way back home from a fair price shop.

"The woman received severe injuries during the assault. On August 8, she lodged a complaint at Mungiakami police station. We have arrested all of the accused," the officer in-charge of Mungiakami police station, Kishore Uchoi, said.

All the three accused have been remanded in judicial custody, he added.

PCC vice-president Tapas Dey alleged that women were not safe in Tripura. According to him, there has been no change in the quality of governance between the Left Front and the current BJP rule.

BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb, however, rubbished the Congress's allegations and said the law and order situation was improving under the BJP rule.

"Women used to face a lot of problems in lodging FIRs during the erstwhile Left Front regime. The incumbent government has done away with such problems. Prompt action on all accused persons is testimony to that," he said.
