May 9: Students of Maharishi Vidya Mandir returned to their classes today when the school reopened after three days, but the air was heavy with the memory of the tragedy that struck on Thursday.
All classes were cancelled and the school was declared closed after a student died following a scuffle with a classmate during lunch recess on Thursday.
The students and teachers tried their best to get on with life, but it was evident that the enormity of the tragedy will take some more time to sink in.
That all was still not well was reflected in the thin attendance at school today. Of 32 students in Class X A section, 10 remained absent.
Principal M. Goswami Baruah and vice-principal Sujata Goswami are still in police custody.
Both teachers had to be admitted to hospital after their health deteriorated on Friday evening.
Police said they would be produced in court after they are released from hospital.
Fifteen-year-old Class X student Udipta Sarma died after he was injured in a scuffle with a classmate, Madhurjya Bora, inside a classroom during lunch recess.
Another student of the same class, Upasana Bhuyan, said a police officer had come to record her statement this morning.
?The police official asked us to narrate the sequence of events that led to Udipta’s death,? she added.
Upasana said she was disturbed with the incident and was not being able to fully concentrate on her studies.
The school reopened today after parents and guardians of the students requested the school administration to resume classes quickly so that the momentum of academic studies is not lost.
The decision was taken at a meeting convened by the guardians’ forum of the school last evening to discuss the developments in the wake of Thursday’s tragic incident.
