Aizawl: The indefinite closure of all government schools by the Mizo Students' Union (MSU) at Bairabi in Kolasib district along the Mizoram-Assam border was called off on Thursday evening as the government succumbed to the students' demands.

The indefinite strike was called by MSU Bairabi sub-headquarters since Monday to protest the absence of two language teachers at Government Bairabi High School.

"The bandh was called off on Thursday following an agreement between the government and the student body," Bairabi MSU president Laldinsanga told The Telegraph on Friday.

He said the government had agreed to take measures to ensure that K. Lalremsanga, a teacher who was transferred to Bairabi High School on May 4, immediately joins the school.

The district administration and district education officer would monitor and pursue the matter.

Kolasib MLA P.C. Zoram Sangliana has agreed to hire Mizo teachers out of his MLA funds on the request of MSU general headquarters president R.B. Lalmalsawma and to ensure that a Mizo teacher is hired immediately in the school.

There are 10 government schools in Bairabi. The student body also closed other schools in neighbouring villages Meidum and Pangbalkawn.

Government Bairabi High School has been running without English and Mizo teachers since 2014 which has severely affected students and Class X results, Laldinsanga said.

Education minister H. Rohluna on Friday said the government is taking massive efforts to fill up all vacant posts.
