Guwahati, Jan. 7: The State-Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare will organise a state-level club and institutions sports quiz on the Gauhati Town Club premises on January 10.

Committee member-secretary Rekibuddin Ahmed today said the contest would be open to all the registered clubs and institutions of the state.

“Each team would comprise a maximum of three contestants. The preliminary phase will be a written one and the best six teams will qualify for the final round. The top three position holders will be awarded prize money of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000,” he said.

“Nearly half the questions in the quiz contest will be on sports in Assam,” he added.

“Clubs and institutions from across the state have collected forms for participation, which is an encouraging sign and we expect all will file in their entries and participate in the quiz,” he said. Ahmed said two other important initiatives will be introduction of the chief minister’s youth awards for excellence in sports and extra-curricular activities, to be presented in February and phasewise felicitation of noted personalities of the state, which would commence with the felicitation of writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami on January 11.

“The committee, which has early this month released one-time grant of Rs 50,000 to each of the 25 district sports associations, will also extend a grant of Rs 50,000 to each of the 31 state sports associations affiliated to the Assam Olympic Association in a function on January 28.

“We are concentrating on the coaching because the government is taking care of infrastructure and equipment. We expect the beneficiaries to utilise the funds properly,” he added.

The committee, has, in the last few months, organised a 10-day archery and taekwondo state-level advanced coaching camp here, a 10-day state-level hockey coaching camp at Samaguri and a videography and editing training-cum-workshop here.

A football coaching camp is under way at Nehru Stadium here and a Bihu workshop at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.
