Imphal, Dec. 30: Koutruk village in Imphal West district has been selected as the National Sports University site in Manipur.
A central team visited the village on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction over it.
The Centre is likely to make a formal announcement on the site in January.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Manipur in the second week of January in connection with the Assembly elections and he might lay the foundation stone of the NSU at Koutruk.
The state government had acquired a 300-acre plot of land at Yaithibi Loukon in Thoubal district for the proposed sports university.
However, during an earlier visit, Union sports minister Vijay Goel found the area low lying. He then showed interest in an alternative site, including Koutruk, which is a highland.
After the announcement of the university in Manipur, the villagers of Koutruk, Senjam Chirang and Khunou had offered land free of cost in 2014. But the state leadership had inspected Yaithibi Loukon along the India-Myanmar Road to present it before the Centre.
Demanding an early decision, the people of Thoubal district, particularly Yaithibi Loukon, even called a strike in the district a few months back.
But sources confirmed that after the assessment of Koutruk by the central team, it is likely to come up at the Imphal West village.
