Rs 1 lakh raised for Sarita

Justice for boxer L. Sarita Devi campaign was able to collect an amount of Rs 1.20 lakh as donations to clear the fine imposed by the International Boxing Association for her denial to receive the bronze medal in 17th Asian Games 2014 at Incheon in South Korea.

Imphal, Sept. 24: Justice for boxer L. Sarita Devi campaign was able to collect an amount of Rs 1.20 lakh as donations to clear the fine imposed by the International Boxing Association for her denial to receive the bronze medal in 17th Asian Games 2014 at Incheon in South Korea.

The campaign spearheaded by Manipur Olympic Association along with Editors Guild Manipur formally handed the collected amount to L. Sarita Devi at MOA Olympic Bhavan yesterday. 

Boxer Sarita Devi along with her coach A. Lenin was slapped a $2,000 fine by the AIBA for her outcry and refusal to accept the bronze medal after she lost the bout to a Korean boxer in the 56-60kg category. 

About 85 well-wishers, including from abroad, have donated Rs 1,05,527 while Rs 15,000 was donated by work and transport minister Kh. Ratankumar Singh. 

Sarita Devi was banned by the AIBA for a year along with the fine. The ban will expire on October 1. 

Manipur Olympic Association president I. Hemochandra Singh along with Kh. Ratankumar, parliamentary secretary for tourism M. Prithiviraj and Editor Guild president A. Mobi Singh, graced the occasion and wished Sarita Devi a gold-medal winning performance in the Rio Olympics. 

L. Sarita Devi also expressed her gratitude and assured the people of the state that she will definitely go for the gold medal and dedicate it to the people. She said after paying off her fine, she would go to London on October 22 for a 15-day Olympic special training session. 

In January 2016, she will be going to Kazaksthan for the Olympic qualifying tournament.
